The government announced 23 more patients to have contracted the virus that causes Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), counting a total of 87 cases confirmed in the nation and five fatalities in three weeks.
According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare's Central MERS Response Team, 17 out of the 23 were confirmed as having contracted the virus from the fourteenth patient at Samsung Medical Center in Ilwon-dong, Gangnam-Gu, in southern Seoul.
The recent updates have now made Korea the second nation in the world with the highest number of confirmed cases, after Saudi Arabia.
Six of the recently confirmed patients have been exposed to patients with the virus in Dae-chung hospital and Konyang University Hospital.
The health ministry has asked the public to contact call centers if suspicious of having contracted the virus by calling 120 for Seoul, 042-120 in Daejeon, and 031-120 for Gyeonggi Province.
The response team had announced, "The epidemic in Pyeongtaek St. Mary's hospital is seen to have become stable, and Samsung Medical Center's will soon decline after this week."
