Tan Chong Group Eyes Myanmar For Expansion Of Auto Business

KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 (Bernama) -- The Tan Chong Group is eyeing Myanmar to expand its automotive business there and further strengthen its presence in Indochina, said its group senior advisor, Datuk Cheah Sam Kip.

"We will start off our business in Myanmar with an auto service centre and that will be the springboard to develop other businesses in that country," he told reporters after a ceremony here today to hand over two Nissan vehicles to Zoo Negara.

Cheah said an application to the Myanmar government had already been submitted and it was now awaiting the approval.

The group is confident of getting the approval this year, he said.

He said Indochina will be the key focus for Tan Chong Group to expand its operations following the competitive automotive landscape in Malaysia, adding that the group has also embarked on an aggressive expansion plan in Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia and Laos.

The Tan Chong Group, comprising Tan Chong Motor Holdings Bhd, Warisan TC Holdings Bhd and APM Automotive Holdings Bhd, has expanded from a passenger car distributor to car manufacturer, spare parts manufacturer and distributor, as well as into the business of heavy industry equipments and after-sales service.

At the event today, Tan Chong Group also officially adopted the Milky Stork bird, which has been classified as a vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Bird Life International.

Zoo Negara has successfully bred and released into Malaysia's wild over 200 of these birds from just 10 known to have been alive before.
