19 May 2011: A driver and a woman medic were killed in a truck accident in Tedim township of Chin state, Burma near the Indo-Burma border on Tuesday.
The truck met with an accident because it was over laden with fertilizers from Tio village, Falam Township on the Indo-Burma border and heading to Kalemyo, Sagaing division.
"Most trucks operating on the Indo-Burma border usually load around 300 bags of fertilizers per truck. But the truck in question loaded 400 bags leading to the accident because it lost control," said an eyewitness on the Indo-Burma border.
Driver Liam Kam of Laitui village, Tedim Township and a woman from Haimual village, going to attend a medic’s training in Falam town were killed on the spot.
"The driver of a truck which overtook the ill-fated one advised the other driver not to drive the way he was driving but he did not listen. The truck plummeted around 100 feet from the road," said a trader from Tio.
Fertilizers are imported from Mizoram, northeast India to central Burma to areas like Kalemyo and Mandalay. Some fertilizers are sent to China through Chin state. - Khonumthung News
