Teknaf, Bangladesh: Refugee camp security police arrested a refugee from Nayapara Camp and extorted money from him on February 26 over the allegation that he had been out of the camp for two years without permission, said a close relative of the victim from the camp who denied to be named.
The victim was identified as Sona Ali (22), son of Abu Shama, MRC # Z-2856, Block #E, Shed #945, Room #1, of Nayapara Refugee Camp.
He went out of the camp for two years after quarrelling with his parents and returned to the camp recently.
After receiving some information, a group of police led by police officer (IC) Nepal entered the camp at about 12 midnight and arrested Sona Ali over the allegation that he had gone to Malaysia and returned to the camp recently, said a refugee from the camp.
However, he was released after paying 5,000 taka later that night. The said police officer frequently enters the camp and arrests refugees by giving false and fabricated allegations to extort money.
Regarding this, many refugees gave complaints to the concerned authorities, but no action has yet been taken against him, said another refugee.
Most of the refugees said that the situation at Nayapara Camp is similar to that of Arakan State, Burma, where Nasaka officers arbitrarily arrest Rohingya and extort money from them. Therefore, it is a great trouble for refugees in the camp.
“Because of this kind of situation, we left Burma and became refugees in Bangladesh. If such situation is allowed to continue in the camp, how can we survive here? We want to appeal to the international community through the media to halt harassment from the police,” said a refugee leader who prefers not to be named.
