More than 500,000 people remain homeless in Myanmar due to a cyclone that hit the country nearly two years ago ahead of a rainy season beginning in May, the International Organization for Migration said.
"There are still as many as 100,000 families without the basic shelter they need to get through the wet season," IOM Myanmar Chief of Mission Mariko Tomiyama said in a statement on Tuesday.
Cyclone Nargis swept through Myanmar in May 2008, killing 140,000 people and leaving 2.4 million homeless.
The IOM is appealing for USD 17 million to meet the shelter needs of 50,000 families, it said, adding that other agencies are also working to provide shelters to those in need.
