30 villages are being submerged under rising flood waters as non-stop downpours are hitting Kyauktaw Township in northeastern Arakan State in Burma.
"The flood water is now five feet high and still continues pouring into our village due to non-stop downpours. We have not experienced such a flood in our villages after three or four days of continual rains before, and now the people are worried about the continuing rising flood," said a villager from Kyaninkan Village in the area.
He said nearly 30 villages around the Thareechaung area, including Kyaninkan, Rwamapyin, Theikwapyin, Leikma, Saphothar, Kansauk, and Tharektapin Villages are now submerged under the flood water.
"All our rice stores have drowned in the water and now we have to go in a row boat on the road, and everyone is afraid as the water level is still rising higher and higher," he said.
A woman from Rwamapyin also confirmed the flood situation in the area.
"Our village and nearby villages are now covered with the flood water. The flood level rises four to five feet and it is very difficult for us to go from one place to another," said the woman.
She said the newly cultivated paddy fields, huts in the fields, and roads and bridges are submerged under the flood water.
According to other sources, Mrauk U and Minbya, Taungup, and Gwa Townships in Arakan State are also affected by the severe flooding, with many people leaving their homes to seek safe ground for shelter.
