SM Krishna to visit Myanmar

New Delhi, June 20 (IBNS): India's External Affairs Minister SM Krishna will visit Myanmar from June 20 to 22.

This will be India’s first high level meeting with Myanmar after the establishment of the new civilian government in Myanmar and its assumption in the office from Mar 30 this year.

“The visit will give us an opportunity to further vitalize our multi-faceted relationship in the new political environment. We will have an exchange of views on enhancing security cooperation as well as our collaboration in the fields of Connectivity, IT, Energy, Agriculture, Power, Telecommunications and Infrastructure,” Krishna said


“We have made considerable progress in implementing decisions and agreements emanating from that visit. Construction had commenced on Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project. We also propose to initiate a few new projects,” he said.

Krishnna said that he will be signing number of MOUs of cooperation with Myanmar during his visit .

“I will be inaugurating three of the ten Rice Silos (Warehouses) being set up in Myanmar and with India’s assistance following the devastating Cyclone Nargis that hit the country 3 years ago. We are likely to sign a number of MOUs of cooperation to further strengthen bilateral cooperation.

" I will be travelling both to Yangoon and Nay Phi Taw, the capital of Myanmar, and would return to New Delhi on 22 June," Krishna said.

Speaking on Pakistan, he said: ”I would also like to briefly reflect on resumption of our dialogue process with Pakistan as mandated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart, in Apr 2010 at Thimphu.”

“In the preceding months, meetings of Home Secretary/ Interior Secretary; Commerce Secretaries, Water Resources Secretaries; Additional Secretary/Surveyor General on Sir Creek and Defence Secretaries on Siachen, have already taken place.

"We have had a useful exchange of views and have gained a better understanding of each other’s positions. We have always approached our discussions in an open and constructive spirit,” he said.

He said that Indian Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao will visit Pakistan to meet her counterpart in the coming days.

“Next, Foreign Secretary Rao will be heading for Islamabad to meet her counterpart. The agenda of discussions is already known to you. Her visit and discussions would carry forward the dialogue process with Pakistan. We also expect to have a meeting of Foreign Ministers of India and Pakistan by July this year,” Krishna said.

“We hope to narrow the trust deficit between our nations and pave the way for normalization of relations by addressing all outstanding issues and concerns, particularly those pertaining to terrorism.

"This menace has to be dealt with firmly and transparently, for the common good of India and Pakistan, as well as, the region beyond,” he said.
