Myanmar bomb blast kills 2

A bomb explosion on a train near Yangon on Wednesday killed at least two people, including a woman, and injured several others, an incident that the government blames on Karen National Union insurgents.

"It was a time bomb. We assume KNU insurgents plotted it in Tatkone Township in the Naypyidaw area," a government official told AFP.

The blast happened on the sidelines of a senior United States’ diplomat’s official visit to Myanmar.

Earlier during the day, Deputy U.S. Assistant Secretary for East Asia and Pacific Affairs Joseph Yun held talks with Myanmarese Foreign Minister Wunna Maung Lwin in Naypyidaw and discussed ways to boost relations between the two countries.

The deputy speaker of the lower chamber of the House of Representatives, U Nanda Kyaw Swar, also met Yun at the Parliament House. During his four-day visit, Yun was also expected to meet pro-democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi, stakeholders, non-governmental organizations and ethnic minorities.

Several bomb blasts have rocked Myanmar in recent years, which the government has claimed to be acts of armed exile groups. Last April, Yangon witnessed one of the worst attacks in five years when a series of bombs exploded at an event to mark Buddhist New Year. The incident killed 10 and injured 170 people.
