A civilian in Shan State South’s Monghsu Township has been arrested by local police over suspicion of being a Shan State Progress Party/Shan State Army (SSPP/SSA) fighter, the group that is fighting against Burma Army since March, according to local sources.
The detainee is identified as Sai Nyo, 47, from Quarter No.2 of Monghsu. He was arrested on 30 April following a raid of his house suspected of hiding weapons and documents related to the SSA, a local source said.
“They found nothing except Chinese currency, about 4 Yuan ($ 0.5). But he is still in jail,” said a source. “They [the authorities] suspect him of being an SSA member as he and his wife used to reside at the SSA’s Headquarters Wanhai.”
The couple returned home with others civilian in March a few days before the Burma Army and the SSA exchanged fire on 13 March. To date, clashes are still going on in Shan State especially in Tangyan and Monghsu townships.
Since the offensive began, many civilians have been killed, arrested and beaten over allegations of being Shan army’s agents, both men and women. Sometimes even 10 years old children were detained to porter and serve as guides for the Burma Army columns.
From 7 -13 April, 10 villagers living outskirts of Shan State North’s Kyaukme township were arrested and tortured over similar allegations of being SSA agents.
In addition, on 19 April, some 7 villages in Shan State East’s Mongpiang township, having an estimated 70 households were razed down to the ground by locally based Burma Army soldiers, alleging people there as agents of Shan State Army (SSA) ‘South’. The ongoing conflict has affected more than 100,000 civilians, reported Chiangmai-based Shan community on 12 April.
