Yangon: Pro-democracy parties which participated in Myanmar's first election in 20 years complained of "foul play" at the polling booths, saying it had dimmed their earlier hopes of winning seats.
The National Democratic Force (NDF), created by former members of democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi's party, initially expressed optimism about its prospects of success in the constituencies it contested, despite the flawed process.
But party chairman Than Nyein said today they had not done as well as first thought in yesterday's election.
"It's very different from our expectation because of foul play. We have our evidence. Some candidates complained... because there was vote cheating," he said.
"We will denounce it after collecting some more information from our people."
Thu Wai, chairman of the Democratic Party, also said the results would be worse than expected, "not only because of the advance votes, but also because we didn't have representatives at every polling station".
It is expected to be several more days before the official results are announced.
The two parties had already accused the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) -- the regime's political proxy group which is widely expected to win -- of illegally collecting advance ballots.
Both groups have also previously complained to local media that they were struggling to find volunteers to man polling stations, as allowed by the electoral laws, to ensure fairness on voting day.
