YANGON, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar Prime Minister General Thein Sein met with visiting Democratic Senator of the United States Jim Webb in the new capital of Nay Pyi Taw Friday afternoon, the state-run Myanmar Radio and Television reported.
Webb also met with the State Constitution Drafting Commission, led by Chief Justice U Aung Toe, the report said.
No details about both of the meetings were disclosed.
Webb arrived the new capital earlier Friday on a visit to Myanmar as part of his two-week tour to five Southeast Asian nations.
Webb's Myanmar visit also represents the first ever one to the country of a member of the U.S. Congress in over a decade.
Aimed at exploring opportunities to advance U.S. interests in Myanmar and the region, Webb is also scheduled to meet with Senior-General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Saturday, diplomatic sources said.
The visit also came days after a Myanmar district sentenced on Aug. 11 an 54-year-old epilepsy-suffering American, John William Yettaw, along with Aung San Suu Kyi, to seven years' rigorous imprisonment on conviction of charge of entering into Aung San SuuKyi's restricted lake-side residence for three days in early May.
Webb came over from Laos, the first leg of his tours to five Southeast Asian nations. He will proceed to Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia after Myanmar visit.
Webb, a Vietnam war veteran and former U.S. Navy Secretary, chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on East Asia and Pacific Affairs.
