Civilians in Kalemyo to construct bridge worth Ks hundred lakh

Villagers in thirty villages of Sagaing Division in northwest Kalemyo, Burma, are constructing a Kale-Tamu link bridge, which would cross the Tuingo River. It is located about 13 miles away from Kalemyo. It would cost around Kyat one hundred lakh.

“The estimated cost will be Kyat hundred lakh, so the concerned village Peace and Development Council Members are collecting donations of Kyat 5000 from every family. The project is being handled by VPDC Council Chairman of Aungywa village in Kalemyo,” a man from Min Hla village said.

The bridge will be 200 feet in length and 20 feet wide and would be able to support trucks and heavy goods carriers. During the rainy season, vehicles cannot cross the river, so the villagers are trying to solve that problem by constructing a bridge, work on which would begin from May, he added.

“Actually we do not have enough money to construct it. We had already reported the matter to the higher authorities, regarding the problems of local villagers and travelers. But, they did not respond so we are planning to construct the bridge by ourselves. Indeed, it is the responsibility of the government. Since they are ignoring it, we have to construct it by collecting donations twice, a member of the VPDC in the locality said.

Similarly, Se Chaung Bridge, which is located between Kale-Letpanchaung villages and is 3 miles away from northwest Kalemyo, was also constructed by the villagers. There has been no help from the government and there are fifty villages near the bridge. The villages produce 40 percent of agricultural products in Kalemyo.

In fact, the military junta collects rice from the farmers, 1 tin per one acre annually. But, they are totally ignorant of the needs of the people like construction of roads and bridges. (Khonumthung News )
