US Official Visits Burmese Muslim Refugee Camp

Cox'sbazar: A senior US State Department official has visited the Burmese Muslim refugee camp in Kutupalong in southeastern Cox's Bazar in Bangladesh on Tuesday, said a camp official.

“The US Assistant Secretary of State Eric P. Schwaz, accompanied by officials from Bangladesh government, UNHCR, and other International NGOs, visited our camp around 12:00 pm today”, said the official.

He said the US official also visited the site of the undocumented Burmese refugees sheltering nearby the official camp after visiting schools, tailoring centers, vocational training centers, and a computer center and had interviews with some of the unregistered refugees on their living conditions.

A press release from the US State Department said Schwaz is on a three-day visit to Bangladesh from 7 to 9 June to meet officials of local government and international and non-government organizations on the issues of giving humanitarian protection and assistances to the registered and unregistered Burmese Muslim refugees taking shelter in the country.

There are over 29,000 registered Burmese Muslim refugees living in two official camps at Kutupalong and Nayapara in Cox’s Barzar and nearly 30,000 unregistered refugees taking shelter in two unofficial sites near the camps.

The United States has expressed a deep concern for the plight of Burmese Muslims in Bangladesh as well as in the region and said it will work with the governments in the region to reach a comprehensive solution to their plight. It said it would continue to provide humanitarian assistance not only to the Burmese but also for the local Bangladeshis in communities that host them.
