Over 27,000 dead or missing in quake, tsunami

More than 27,000 people are dead or missing from the March 11th earthquake and tsunami in eastern Japan.

The National Police Agency says 12,321 people have been confirmed dead so far.

The highest number of deaths is in Miyagi Prefecture -- 7,530 -- followed by 3,592 in Iwate Prefecture and 1,139 in Fukushima Prefecture.

About 82 percent of the victims, more than 10,000, have been identified and the bodies are being handed over to their families.

The agency puts the number of missing at 15,347, based on reports mostly from family members.

The number of dead could increase as municipality officials in some areas have been unable to fully assess the number of people missing.

Search operations within the 20-kilometer exclusion zone around the disabled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant are incomplete because of radiation.

The National Police Agency says about 165,000 people are living in evacuation centers mainly in Miyagi, Iwate and Fukushima prefectures.

In Miyagi alone, nearly 65,000 are taking refuge in 506 shelters.
