Two Chin refugees die in accident in New Delhi



23 February: Two Chins, seeking asylum from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in New Delhi, the capital of India, were killed in an accident at around 1:00 am on February 22.




Van Lian Ceu (18) son of Mr. Kei Sum, Singai village, Falam township in Chin state and Lal Uk Bik (23) son of Rev. Tlang Ling, Selawn village of Falam were killed in an accident after a truck hit their motorcycle, said an eyewitness.


Three persons were riding on a motorcycle owned by Van Lian Ceu. Maung Bik (Maunga) was lucky to escape, while the two others died on the spot.


“Maung Bik escaped without injuries but he is in trauma and was unable to say anything about the accident. He was in the middle and the driver and the last pillion rider were killed,” said Mr. Val Tha.


The bodies were taken by the local police to the hospital for post mortem.


New Delhi Chin refugee authorities are trying to take the bodies to the Burmese Community Resource Centre in Vikaspuri, for the funeral today and have applied to the concerned authorities.


Chin refugees are staying in New Delhi under the protection of the UNHCR without any financial support and surviving by doing odd jobs. Approximately, over 10,000 Chin refugees reside in New Delhi. Khonumthung News
