Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazaar: Four huts belonging to refugee families living in Kutupalong Unofficial Refugee Camp were burnt down last night at about 1:00 a.m. while the refugees were sleeping inside, said a refugee leader from the camp on condition of anonymity.
The owners of the huts have been identified as Jura Khatrun, Nurul Islam, Sayed Alam, and Ali Zyhar of Block D-1 at the Kutupalong Unofficial Camp.
The fire originated from Jura Khatun’s hut while she was sleeping after she had left a bonfire where she was warming herself as she was sick. Later, the fire spread to the other huts and destroyed them. The huts were made of plastic, and the sleeping refugees were unable to save any of their goods or household belongings.
According to a refugee elder from the Kutupalong Camp, an estimated total of 50,000 taka was lost in the fire. The refugee families lost clothes, blankets, cooking things, and some cash.
The neighboring refugees have offered help by buying the affected families new plastic for re-building their huts and some pots and food. However, the families have not received any help from the government or NGOs, said another refugee.
Some domestic animals were also lost in the fire, but no one was injured in the fire.
