05 January 2011: A Kalay-bound truck carrying full of passengers on Tuesday hit the roadside edge and overturned on the road near Taingen village of Falam Township, killing a 13-year-old school student and injuring many passengers.

Eight passengers are in critical conditions at a hospital in Kalay Myo, Sagaing Division of Burma. The body of the teenage girl has been taken to Tedim Town. The driver of the truck escaped the accident unharmed but has been detained in Tedim.

Originating from Falam Town, the truck was reportedly loaded with goods including fruits and vegetables when the incident occured just a distance away from Taingen village.

It remains unclear as to exactly how the accident happened.

The accident is the second deadly road accident to occur in Chin State in less than two months. On November 26, the deadliest accident claimed 17 lives and injured over 30 people. The passengers were on their way to attend a centennial celebration marking the arrival of American missionary Rev. J Cope in Tedim Town.

Two leading Chin political parties, Chin National Party (CNP) and Chin Progressive Party (CPP), both campaigned on road transportation development during the November 7 elections, as Chin State has seen little infrastructural development under successive military regimes.
