YANGON - A MYANMAR man arrested for recording images at the scene of a bomb blast in April was sentenced to eight years in prison and could face another decade behind bars, his legal adviser said on Thursday.
A series of explosions on April 15 left 10 people dead and about 170 wounded as thousands of people gathered for water-throwing festivities to mark the Buddhist New Year, in the worst attack in five years in Myanmar's main city.
Police later blamed the attack on a militant exile group.
Sithu Zeya was handed a three-year jail term for sending information to an illegal exile media organisation and a further five years for an immigration charge, his legal representative Aung Thein told AFP.
The 21-year-old was a reporter for the banned Democratic Voice of Burma, which uses the country's former name, according to the group's news website.
'He is also now facing another charge under the Electronic Act. He can be sentenced at least another 10 years under this act,' Mr Aung Thein said, referring to Myanmar's controversial communications laws. -- AFP
