Nasaka targets NDPD supporters for arrest

Maungdaw, Arakan State: Burma’s border security force (Nasaka) have been arresting supporters of the National Democratic Party for Development (NDPD) since November 1, according to an election watchdog group in Maungdaw.

The group said Mamon Rashid, an NDPD supporter from Shweza village, was arrested by Nasaka officers yesterday.

“Nasaka gave no reason for the arrest and detained him at their Outpost 14 in Area 5 before transferring him to Nasaka headquarters,” said one Nasaka aide on condition of anonymity.

Syed Alam, identified as a collaborator with Nasaka, assaulted an NDPD supporter in Dargadil village on November 1. When the party filed a complaint about the attack, no action was taken, the aide said.

Nasaka personnel since November 1 have urged local villagers to support the Burmese junta-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) and reject other parties, while also promising that the party would improve development in Arakan State, said an elder from Maungdaw.

“Nasaka never mentioned the parties that villagers were not supposed to support, and they issued indirect threats of harm against anyone who would not support the USDP,” the elder said.

Nasaka officers have also reportedly commanded village authorities to convince their residents to support the USDP and to keep track of all supporters of the NDPD.
