Low turnout of voters in Chin State

11 November 2010: Many people did not vote in the 2010 general election in Chin state on November 7 for a variety of reasons.

There are about 60,000 eligible voters in Falam township but only about 15,000 turned up to cast their votes.

“We know the regime backed political party will come to power whether we vote or not. We were not interested in the election,” said a local who did not vote.

In Dawn village, Thantlang township, 176 out of 525 voters did not vote in this election while eight voters in Buhphir village, Tiddim township who are 19 years old, were not allowed to vote by the authorities.

“The village election commission did not allow them to cast votes because their names were not on the township election commission’s voters list,” said a local in Buhphir village.

Meanwhile, the authorities cancelled the right of 4000 voters to exercise their franchise for the National Parliament of a Chin ethnic group in Tamu township constituency, Sagaing division.

There are 1,66,400 eligible voters in Kalemyo constituency, of whom 86,063 are Burmese, 79,015- ethnic groups and 1322 - other tribes. There were 55,000 uncast and cancelled votes.

The wining candidates are U Tin Hlai (People’s Parliament), U Thein Hlai (National Parliament), U Sein Win (Region Parliament), U Khin Maung Than (Region Parliament) and Pu No Than Kap (Region Parliament) from the Chin National Party (CPP). – Khonumthung News.
