USDP tries to mobilize Mara people for votes

9 October 2010: Going all out to win the polls, the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) has dispatched local representatives of the Mara tribe to mobilize them for votes in the 2010 general elections in Matupi township, Chin state western Burma.

The leaders of Chin ethnic groups and Mara people have formed the Ethnic National Development Party (ENDP) to contest for parliamentary seats in Matupi township constituency (1).

The USDP selected a local person known as U Amit, a retired Township Education Director for parliament from that constituency. He is a simple person and ironically disinterested in politics. Khonumthung News was unable to reach him.

“USDP is trying to mop up all votes of Mara people,” said a Chairman of the Block Peace and Development Council (BPDC).

“People need to be cautious while casting votes. They must know that ENDP was formed after the people agreed and are aware of its objectives,” said an ENDP official.

It is learnt that USDP is wooing people by offering to issue national identity cards without charge. The official fee for making an identity card is Kyat 15,000 in Matupi township.

“Actually, they do not have the authority to issue identity cards, but they are doing it because they are backed by the military regime. They have selected candidates who will obey them,” said a local teacher.

In Matupi township constituency (2), the candidates for the Parliament are U Amit from USDP, Pu Sang Hlei Mang from ENDP, U Shwe Thang from NDF and Paul Lian Lui from CPP. – Khonumthung News.
