USDP to spend millions of kyat on election campaig

Maungdaw, Arakan State: The Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) has a budget of as much as 200 million kyat, or about US$200,000 for its campaign in northern Arakan ahead of the November 7 election, a source close to the party said.

USDP candidate Aung Zaw Win took out a loan of 200 million kyats from Myanmar Agriculture and Rural Development Bank with the assistance of high-ranking junta officials using his business holdings as collateral, the source said.

Aung Zaw Win owns Shein Construction Company as well as other prominent businesses including the Mein Mour Nan Hotel in Burma’s capital Naypyidaw.

Brigadier General Soe Shin of Burma’s ruling State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) is co-owner of the Mein Mour Nan Hotel, and Aung Zaw Win has used his name during recent campaign events, the source said.

“When campaigning started in Maungdaw, Aung Zaw Win said that the USDP would have more money to spend than any other party,” said an election watchdog group in Maungdaw.

Aung Zaw Win reportedly made this explicit during recent campaigning.

“We urge the people to support us. But even if you don’t support us, we will win in the coming election because we have the support of the government,” Aung Zaw Win was reported to have said during a campaign stop in Maungdaw.
