Myanmar's pro-junta party vows to support market economy

Yangon - Myanmar's main pro-junta political party has pledged to support multi-party democracy and a market-oriented economy as its key election platform, media reports said Saturday.

Htay Oo, secretary-general of the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) spelled out the party's political platform for the upcoming November 7 polls on national television and radio Friday night, the state-run New Light of Myanmar reported.

If elected, the USDP will 'practice the multiparty democracy system, market-oriented economic system and independent and active foreign policies,' Htay Oo claimed.

He also said the party would 'guarantee freedom of religion.'

The USDP, established in June, is the political arm of the military junta that has been running the country with an iron fist since 1988 and suppressed the so-called 'saffron revolution' led by Buddhist monks in 2008.

With more candidates and money than its rival 35 parties, the USDP is expected to make a strong showing in the election, the first to be held in 20 years.

New election rules have essentially blocked the participation of the key opposition party, the National League for Democracy and its leader, Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, who will be under house arrest until November 13.

The USDP's closest rival in terms of the number of candidates and financing is the National Unity Party, another pro-military party.

A total of 36 political parties were approved by the election eommission.

All the approved parties were supposedly allowed to canvass for votes through military-controlled radio and TV as of September 24, but to date only the USDP has done so.

Few analysts expect the USDP to introduce far-reaching political or economic reforms if it comes to power. Myanmar's economy was closed to outsiders until 1988, when the military regime introduced market-oriented reforms that tend to benefit the generals and their cronies.
