Pay for checking voter list in Maungdaw

Maungdaw, Arakan State: Village authorities of Maungdaw Township are asking money to check voter list in their area from villagers, according to a village elder from Maungdaw.

“The village authority demand me to pay money when went to check my voter list in my village authority office or village election commission office,” said a resident of block number two, Maungdaw Township.

“The authority demand 500 kyats to check my voter list in area, is there my list or not,” the resident said.

In the rural area, village authorities are demanding money from their villagers who want to check their voter list, said a local of Shweza village, Maungdaw.

“The village authorities are asking 500 – 1000 kyats per person if he /she wants to check his/her name was enlist or not,” the local said.

“In our village, the authority asks 1000 kyat for checking the voter list enlists,” the local more add.

Most of the officer, who are involved in election sector, earning easy money and harassing people from the Rohingya community with showing election matter, said a school teacher.

It is a way for earning money from villager with related election for village authorities or village election commission. May be township level election commission directed this to rural area authorities, the teacher said.
