The government-appointed Union Election Commission has dissolved five political parties out of 42, already passed for registration, for their inability to compete in at least three constituencies, leaving a total of 37 parties qualified to run the coming general election, according to an announcement of the commission carried in all Wednesday's official dailies.
The dissolution of the five parties followed that of five other old parties including the National League for Democracy (NLD) which were said to have failed to re-apply for continued existence within the 60-day deadline.
The disqualified five parties, which show inability to compete in the at least three constituencies, are Union Kayin League, Myanmar New Society Democratic Party, Myanmar Democracy Congress, Mro National Party and Regional Development Party-Pyay.
A total of 47 parties sought for entering the polls set for Nov. 7.
The commission has closed on Aug. 30 for enlisting of candidates from political parties to contest in the election in terms of constituencies and parliaments at respective levels.
Disclosed by the commission, the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), led by Prime Minister U Thein Sein, is fielding 1,100 candidates, National Unity Party (NUP) 975, National Democratic Force (NDF), which a splinter faction from the NLD, 160 and Shan Nationals Democratic Party (SNDP) 157 to run the election.
The commission designated 330 constituencies for parliamentary house of representatives election and 12 constituencies for parliamentary house of nationalities election in each region or state across the country in running the election.
It also designated two constituencies for each township for election of parliamentary representatives in each region or state and one constituency for election of parliamentary representatives for each ethnic minority in each region or state.
Following the quit of military titles but not government posts of Prime Minister U Thein Sein, who is No. 4 state leader, along with 26 other government ministers, some two senior Myanmar leaders, Thura U Shwe Mann, No. 3 state leader, and Thiha Thura U Tin Aung Myint Oo, No. 5 state leader, also followed suit ahead of the November election
Thura U Shwe Mann is member of the State Peace and Developemnt Council (SPDC) and Chief of General Staff of the Army, Navy and Air Force, and Thiha Thura U Tin Aung Myint Oo is SPDC First Secretary.
The two leaders are expected to contest for parliament representatives in the polls.
