22 September 2010: In a spirited campaign against the Burmese military junta, the headquarters of the Chin state National League for Democracy (NLD), has kick started a campaign among voters to boycott the general election. It is urging people not to cast votes.
“The election is designed to put in place the 2008 constitution and institutionalize military rule. We are making people aware of the reality and urging them not to cast votes in the election as Daw Aung San Su Kyi said ‘there is a right to live even by not casting votes’. We are telling voters not to go to polling booths,” said Pu Vanlian, President of NLD in Chin state.
The Chin state NLD is not only into an anti-poll campaign in Hakha town but also in Falam and Tedim townships. They are garnering support of the people, he added.
He added that Chin people may not be interested in voting as November 7 is a Sunday. Most Chin people are Christians and they will prioritize going to church. So, in Chin state votes cast will be less compared to other states and divisions.
The anti-poll campaign will continue till the day of the election.
The NLD swept the polls in the 1990 elections but was not handed power by the junta. It decided not to register with the Election Commission and contest this election on March 29. The party started the poll boycott campaign from 19 August. – Khonumthung News.
