Ten persons in each village to join USDP in Chin state

20 August 2010: At least 10 persons in each village in Chin state western Burma have to enroll in the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) as of August 2010 on the orders of the Falam Township Peace and Development Council (TPDC).

Falam TPDC issued this order to all village tract groups at its monthly meeting.

“Most are not interested in USDP and do not want to join the party. So, the authorities are forcing people and village heads have to report to the TPDC by 25 August,” said a chairman of a village tract.

“Now people responsible in village tracts are collecting the list of names of older persons in all villages given that the young are difficult to persuade. Most are unaware of what is going on,” he added.

Government employees and retired persons are already members of USDP. Regarding the order to enroll in the USDP, Pu Nang Thang, second president of Chin Progressive Party (CPP) said, “It is certain that the forthcoming general elections will not be free and fair given the junta’s activities.”

There are 180 villages with 47,000 people in Falam Township. Of these 1500 are government employees and 500 are retired people. There are 2500 members in the USDP including government employees in Falam Township. - Khonumthung News
