Candidates Line-Up for 2010 Race

18 August 2010: The election landscape is shaping up in Chin State with some details emerging about party candidacies and their nominees. With the junta having set the much-anticipated election date for November 7, political parties are now scrambling to designate their candidates for the two Houses of National Parliament, as well as, the Chin State Legislature.

Four political parties are contesting in Thantlang Township: Chin National Party (CNP), Union Democratic Party (UDP), Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), and National Unity Party (NUP).

Information received by Chinland Guardian indicates that all four political parties, with the exception of the Union Democratic Party (UDP), have designated their candidates for contests in Thanlang Township, which receives a total of four seats according to constituencies designated by the Election Commission.

On November 7, voters will be voting simultaneously for both the National Parliament and State Legislature. In Chin State, nine lower House parliamentary (Pyithu Hluttaw) seats are up for grabs by ‘civilian’ parties while another 12 seats are designated for the Upper House (Amyotha Hluttaw).

The number of seats contestable by civilian parties for the Chin State Legislature is set at 18 with six more seats being reserved for army appointees, bringing the total number of the State Legislative Members to 24.
