Norwegian ship hijacked off Madagascar

OSLO, Norway — A Norwegian ship owner says a vessel with 21 crew members has been hijacked by Somali pirates near Madagascar.

Th. Broevigtank Shipowners CEO Svenn Pedersen says the UBT Ocean chemical tanker with its crew, all from Myanmar, was captured early Friday. It was not clear Saturday whether anyone was injured, or whether any ransom has been demanded.

The ship was on its way from the United Arab Emirates to Tanzania when the captain alerted the owners that it had been hijacked.

Pedersen says "contact was broken and nothing has been heard from the ship since then."

The vessel is registered in the Marshall Islands and was carrying fuel oil.
