Kalemyo NLD MP Dothawnga hospitalized

2 March 2010: Mr.Dothawnga, a National League for Democracy (NLD) Member of Parliament and Chin political leader was admitted to Kalemyo hospital on February 16. He is suffering from paralysis of his left arm and leg.

“On 16 February at 9 am he was talking to my mother at home when suddenly my father could not move his left arm. While I was searching for a vehicle to take him to hospital his left leg went limp. We took him to Kalemyo hospital,” said Mrs. Siami, daughter of Mr. Dothawnga.

She said that he was responding to treatment in hospital and now he can move his legs, but he cannot walk yet.

Mr. Dothawnga’s health has been weak after he was arrested and tortured in prison. He had suffered from paralysis in 2005 also.

He is also suffering from diabetes too. However, his political beliefs are still strong and he is actively involved in NLD.

He was arrested and sent to Mandalay Ukgu prison for seven years from 1996 and was released in 2003. After being freed local authorities watched him closely and tried to arrest him during the saffron revolution in 2007 but he got away because of his health problems.

Mr. Dothawnga was elected MP from Kalemyo, Sagaing division as a NLD candidate in the 1990 general elections in Burma.- Khonumthung News
