The government will import 25,000 metric tones of sunned rice from Myanmar to meet the domestic demand for the staple food.
To this effect, the Cabinet Committee on Public Purchase at a meeting on Sunday with Finance Minister AMA Muhith in the chair approved a bid proposal.
As per a proposal from the food ministry, Singapore-based Indo-Sino Trade Pte Ltd will supply the bulk rice from Myanmar at a rate of US$ 395 per tonne.
The total import will cost around Tk 68.73 crore.
The Indo-Sino Trade syndicate won the contract 'as the lowest bidder', said an official of the Cabinet Division.
