Entire village gutted in Hakha Township, Chin state

19 March 2010: A devastating fire destroyed an entire village called Lungkhin in Hakha township, Chin state western Burma on March 11. The fire razed to the ground 42 houses rendering over 1000 villagers homeless.

The fire was started by a child, who was playing with a burning stick on the roof of a house, while all the male members of the village were working on a road construction site between Aika and Lungkhin. So villagers were unable to extinguish the fire and it gutted more than 40 houses.

A local told Khonumthung News that there were no casualties. The victims are staying with their relatives in other villages. The Town Peace and Developemnt Council (TPDC) gave them some bags of rice as relief.

Besides, the affected people are being helped by Chin people from abroad, religious groups, the I Love Myanmar group and the Red Cross in Burma.

Lungkhin village is one of the most affected by famine in Chin state and it is at the junction of Hakha, Gangaw and Matupi Townships. There are about 120 houses in the village. – Khonumthung News.
