Earthquake strikes central Burma

An earthquake of magnitude 4.6 on the Richter scale, rocked central Burma on Tuesday evening said the state run media the New Light of Myanmar newspaper today.

“A moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.6 on the Richter Scale with its epicenter in Burma about 220 miles southeast of Mandalay seismological observatory was recorded...,” said the newspaper.

The tremor was recorded at 19 hours 32 minute and 40 seconds local time, 200 miles from Mandalay the second largest city in Burma, said the newspaper.

However there is no mention of the impact of the earthquake. A Yangon (Rangoon) based seismological observatory department staff said, they don’t have the authority to speak.

“There was an earthquake southeast of Mandalay yesterday but we have no idea of the damage,” said the staff.

The staff referred to the authorities in Naypyitaw the new jungle capital of Burma for detailed information.

An earthquake of magnitude 7 on the Richter scale rocked Haiti on 12 January. A quake of 8.8 magnitude shook Chile on February 27 and another of 5.9 magnitude hit Turkey on March 8.

In Haiti at least three million people were affected and more than 200,000 people were killed. In Chile at least 500 were confirmed dead. In Turkey over 50 people died.
