Suu Kyi Remains Incarcerated as She is Barred in elections
The defense lawyers, who are also leading members of Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD), are seeking the meeting to consult with the Nobel Laureate on two major issues: the NLD’s possible next move in light of the new electoral laws promulgated by the junta, and Suu Kyi’s remaining options with regards to her legal appeal that was quashed by Burma’s Supreme Court last month.
The 64 year-old pro-democracy leader remains incarcerated at her home in Rangoon, serving the remainder of her fresh 18-month sentence, which is due to expire in November 2010.
The new electoral laws announced by the military regime earlier this month effectively bar Suu Kyi from contesting as a candidate, and her party from participating in the elections unless the NLD first expels her from the party membership.
The election laws announcement has sparked a new wave of international outrage. It prompted Australia, for example, to publicly declare last week that it will consider supporting a UN commission of inquiry into alleged international crimes in Burma.
Meanwhile, Suu Kyi is expected to be seen by her personal physicians on April 1st, as part of a routine medical examination pre-approved by the military junta.
