JOHOR BARU: A foreign worker was found hiding inside the water tank of a toilet when enforcement officers from the Johor Immigration Department raided a restaurant in Taman Anggerik on Friday.
Enforcement officers, who found the toilet locked, knocked on its door and became suspicious when there was no reply. They then forced open the door.
Johor Immigration enforcement chief Masri Adul said the team found no one using the toilet but when they knocked on the tank, it did not produce a hollow sound.
"Upon opening the tank, we found a Myanmar inside the tank. He had to be helped out of the tank because he was freezing, apparently from having hidden in the water for a long time," Masri said, adding that illegal immigrants would subject themselves to life-threatening situations to escape deportation.
Two Indonesian men, two Indonesian women and two Bangladeshis, believed to be without valid travel documents and work permits, were also arrested during the raid.
All the illegal immigrants have been sent to the Pekan Nanas deportation centre.
In a separate raid at a shophouse that had been turned into workers' quarters, 11 Cambodians aged between 19 and 39 were detained for failing to produce valid documents.
"We also raided an entertainment outlet in Jalan NB2 2/1, Taman Nusa Bestari, at 8.45pm on Friday and 12 guest relations officers from the Philippines, aged between 20 and 37, were arrested," Masri said.
"At the time, all the women were busy attending to customers. None of them was aware that the place was being raided."
He said a local man, believed to be the employer of the GROs, was detained to facilitate investigations into the hiring of workers without proper permits.
