18 Kilograms of Heroin Seized on Bangladesh-Burma Border in Last Five Months

Dhaka: Bangladesh authorities have seized 18 kilograms of heroin on the southeast border of Bangladesh near Burma during the last five months, reports an official source.

The source said, "18 kilograms of heroin has been seized by Bangladesh law enforcement within the last five months in Cox's Bazar District on the southeastern border of Bangladesh with Burma."

According to sources, Bangladesh Rifles Battalions 42 and 17 based in Cox's Bazar have seized the heroin in special drug operations within the last five months.

The BDR battalions have also seized one kilogram of cocaine and several hauls of yaba tablets and other drugs during the same time period.

On 10 March, 2010, personnel from BDR Battalion 17 seized one kilogram of heroin from a bus at Ramu Bypass on the Cox's Bazar - Chittagong highway.

During the seizure, BDR officers arrested 28-year-old Nurul Amin from Chokoria Town in Cox's Bazar District for possession of the drugs, said a Bangladesh police source.

According to a Bangladesh narcotics department source, the drug smuggling syndicates in both Burma and Bangladesh use Bangladesh as a route for drug smuggling to other countries.
