16 Bangladeshi Prisoners Repatriated by Burma

Dhaka: 16 Bangladeshi prisoners were taken back to Bangladesh by Burmese border authorities on 24 February , who transported them in a machine boat across the Naff River to the Maungdaw - Teknaf border point, report Bangladesh authorities.

However, the repatriation was not legal and no prior arrangements or deal had been made with the concerned Bangladesh authorities.

"We had not received any information from Burma about the transferring of Bangladesh nationals beforehand. We knew about it only when we arrested seven Bangladesh nationals who had served prison terms in a Burmese prison," he said.

Bangladesh police arrested just seven of the returned Bangladeshis on the banks of the Naff River, while the remaining managed to evade capture.

Those arrested were identified as 22-year-old Mr. Nawzu Myr, 25-year-old Shahar Zar Long, 20-year-old Sha Hanzan, 30-year-old Boshi, 26-year-old Soyaw Along, 20-year-old Muhamad Rofi, and 28-year-old Kodue Audi. All are from Cox's Bazar District in Teknaf Township.

According to the source, the Bangladeshi prisoners were taken from Buthidaung prison on the western Burmese border, where some foreign prisoners staged a hunger strike on 18 February, 2010.

The hunger strike was in protest of the inadequate amount of food they are given daily, and began after the UN rights envoy visited the prison.

However, there is no information about whether the repatriation of the Bangladeshi prisoners has any relation to the recent hunger strike at the prison.

A source close to Buthidaung prison reports that 71 foreign prisoners were on a hungers strike, and most of them are Bangladesh nationals.
