Naska arrests villagers for extortion in northern Arakan

Maungdaw, arakan State: Burma’s border security force, or Nasaka arrested villagers with false and fabricated accusations and extorted money after severe torturing, said a village elder on condition of anonymity.

On February 16, Sayed Ahmed (75), son of Md Wares, hailed from Kilai Daung village of Maungdaw Township, was arrested by the Naska of Fadensa outpost camp of Maungdaw township over allegation that he has crossed the Burma-Bangladesh border without taking permission from the concerned authority. However, later, on that day, he was released after taking Kyat 800,000. The money was paid through a Naska broker named Abdu Rahim, son of ex-village Chairman Awli, the village elder more added.

On February 10, another villager named Noman (40), son of Maulvi Fayazul Haque, the same village was arrested by the same Nasaka by giving same allegation. However, he was released on February 16, after taking Kyat 550,000.

Another villager named Wares (22), son of Abu Talek, hailed from the same village was arrested by the same Nasaka on February 15, over the same allegation. He is so far in the Nasaka camp because of his incapacity to give the money which Naska demanded.

Nasaka’s arbitrary arrest in Maungdaw Township is increasing day by day though the election is knocking at the door. On the other hand, the concerned authorities have been organizing Arakanese Rohingya community for the upcoming 2010 election, said a village elder who denied to be named, said a Businessman from the locality who preferred not to be named.

Recently, a Nasaka official said to some of villagers of Buthidaung Township, “The regional law we have been enforcing against the Arakanese Rohingya people is very rough, but, Arakanese Rohingyas are still resisting. If the law is enforced to the pigs in the forest, all the pigs will flee from the area,” said a local elder.

A local trader from Maungdaw said, “The salary is not sufficient for their family support. So, they were indirectly ordered by the higher authority to extract money from local areas where they are appointed.”

Arakanese Rohingyas are caught between crocodile and snake. In Arakan of Burma and in Bangladesh Arakanese Rohingyas are arrested and tortured. Some of them were sent to jail, said an elder from Maungdaw Town.
