Myanmar-Chinese paying respect to elderly people before new year of Tiger

Paying respect to the elderly people has been highlighting the activities of Chinese community in Myanmar's Yangon in anticipation of the upcoming lunar new year, the year of Tiger.

Myanmar-Chinese residents have been busy spending the spring festival even before its fall with the aged people having been invited to some social associations to receive new year gifts and Hongbao (a small red packet with cash money).

"Respecting the aged, taking care of the weak" is a fine tradition of Chinese people. Normally, it is so, when new year comes, the care doubles.

This kind of loving kindness and charity move have been maintained by many Myanmar-Chinese associations for years.

The launching of a series of such activities in the community added to atmosphere in the pre-new year days.

On Feb. 5, Yangon's activities of paying respect to the aged people started with the donation of daily necessities and Hongbao to the aged people by the Shwe Taung Company to the Charity Association.

The donation was distributed to groups of registered childless old people by both organizations.

Honorable Chairman of the Charity Association and President of the Shwe Taung Company told Xinhua that "providing warmth to the old people, we also feel gratified and warm. Our activity is to tell young people that paying respect to the aged is our fine tradition and virtue and let it be inherited from generation to generation."

On Feb. 6, the Myanmar-Chinese Charity Association held a Hongbao presentation ceremony, in which its Chairman Xu Yixin briefed that the organization not only offers childless old people living expense every month but also present gifts and Hongbao whenever new year sets in. In addition, the organization also invited old-aged Myanmar people for meal to express loving kindness and deep paukphaw (fraternal) friendship.

On Feb. 7, 150 people aged above 70 years were invited to Qing Fu Gon Temple for meal and receive nearly 100 wellwishers' donation of food, healthcare items, necessities and new year Hongbao.

With smile on faces and hope in eyes, these old people gently spoke words of thanks and blessing.

On Feb. 8, Myanmar Fujian Natives Association held a new year dinner party to pay respect to old-aged people. The function was attended by high officials of the Chinese embassy in Myanmar with the organization's chairman Lu Zhenbin delivering speech of felicitation.

It is learnt that some similar organizations also launched the same for the age.
