Enlisted personnel’s pay also rises

When Naypyitaw decided to raise salaries of low-paid employees in January, it also included those of the Tatmadaw’s privates and non-commissioned officers, according to a report coming from the border.

All enlisted personnel, from private to sergeant, are getting a K 5,000 ($5) increase:

From (Kyat) To (Kyat)
New recruit 36,000 ($ 36) ---
Private 36,000 ($36) 41,000 (41)
Lance Corporal 42,000 (42) 47,000($47)
Corporal 48,000 ($48) 53,000 (53)
Sergeant 54,000 ($54) 59,000($ 59)

The highest paid in the Tatmadaw (Armed Forces) are the Senior General (K 1.2 million) and the Deputy Senior General (K 1.0 million).

According to Mizzima News, civil servants with K 15,000 ($15)-K 80,000 ($80) per month would receive a fixed increase of K 20,000 ($20) a month. Only those receiving above K 100,000 ($100) are excluded from the hike.

However, with the increase in the commodity prices, the pay hike won’t help much. “It is just like throwing sesame seeds into an elephant’s mouth,” said the source on the border, using a well known Burmese expression.
