Czech Center reels human rights

If you are curious about seeing North Korea without shelling out thousands then check out the film "Welcome to North Korea."

Directed by Linda Jablonska, the film follows Czech tourists on a tour of the hermit kingdom as they are shepherded by guides through carefully prepared illusions.

As the North Korean system is reminiscent of the Czechs' own communist past, the travelers deal with conflicting feelings of sympathy, nostalgia, and relief that such a system is behind them.

The documentary will be shown on Thursday and Jan. 28 at 4 p.m. at the Czech Info Center in Hongdae in the Czech language with English subtitles.

Two other films about human rights will be shown at the center on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the end of the communism in the former Czechoslovakia.

On Jan. 29, the newest documentary by Emmy Award-winning director Cory Taylor, "The Power and the Powerless," will be shown in its English version.

History has shown that societies which fail to address past injustices are tragically destined to repeat the same mistakes.

Narrated by Academy Award winner Jeremy Irons, the film examines the harmful effects of erasing history, twenty years after the fall of communism in Czechoslovakia.

The third movie in this series is "Burma VJ," which follows a tenacious band of Burmese reporters who face down death to expose the repressive regime controlling their country.

In 2007, after decades of self-imposed silence, Myanmar made headline news across the globe when peaceful Buddhist monks led a massive rebellion.

Armed with pocket-sized video cameras, the Democratic Voice of Burma, aka the Burma VJs, took to the streets to document what the junta hoped would never be leaked to the outside world.

Acclaimed filmmaker Anders Ostergaard pulls us into the heat of the moment as the VJs themselves become the target of the Burmese government.

The film will be shown on Wednesday in English with Korean subtitles.

Admission is free of charge and space is limited. To contact the center, call (02) 725-6765.

These films are shown on the sidelines of the exhibition "Unforgettable Fall of 1989."

The idea behind both these events is to remind people of the fact that there are still the "other worlds" existing around the world and that the fight for human rights and democracy should go on.
