YANGON, May 22 (Xinhua) -- The Indian state-owned company of PEC Ltd has offered to import 8,000 tons of beans and pulses from Myanmar, a local weekly reported Friday.
The import of green gram and black gram is scheduled for June, the Biweekly Eleven said.
According to official statistics, Myanmar exported over 1.5 million tons of beans and pulses out of 4.25 million hectares in the fiscal year of 2008-09, earning 806 million U.S. dollars.
The year's Myanmar-India bilateral trade was registered at 995 million dollars with Myanmar's exports to India accounting for 810million dollars and its imports taking 185 million dollars. Myanmar enjoyed a trade surplus of 625 million dollars.
India stands as Myanmar's 4th largest trading partner after Thailand, China and Singapore and also Myanmar's second largest export market after Thailand, absorbing 25 percent of its total exports.
In terms of beans export, Myanmar stands as the second largest in the world after Canada with 76 percent of the crop being shipped to India.
Meanwhile, Myanmar is also planning to penetrate the Middle East market through Israel with its quality beans to boost the country's agricultural exports.
