Chin people pray for Suu Kyi’s freedom

27 May, 2009: People of Chin State in western Burma have been praying daily in churches, monasteries and other places of worship, for Aung San Suu Kyi’s freedom.

The people are very worried about the Junta’s stand on Suu Kyi and are doing whatever they can to pray for her freedom.

“There are 35 churches in Falam Town. We used to have prayers for political prisoners once a week. However, currently, we are all praying in churches and monasteries for Draw Aung San Suu Kyi, as she has been illegally arrested and her trial is unjust,” a member of the Falam Baptist Church said.

Chin women are also very worried for Suu Kyi. “Indeed, we are totally dependent upon Daw Suu Kyi for the prosperity of our country. At the same time, we are worried about her life as she can be killed like her father. We, therefore always pray for her,” a Chin woman told Khonumthung News.

Although there are no hindrances or obstructions by the authorities, as far as the prayer ceremonies of the Chin people are concerned, yet some people in plainclothes have been keeping a watch on all events, a local from Kalemyo said.

Similarly, people in Tamu Township are also praying for Suu Kyi. Aizawl-based Burmese Christians have starved for a day on 25 May, 2009, including members of four different churches and all members numbering about hundred. In fact, they used to hold such prayers every week in May for the freedom of political prisoners.

“Although we are staying in Mizoram State, India, we prayed for the Burmese people and democracy for the country, as well as for the freedom of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. On this occasion many women also participated,” a church leader in Aizawl City, Mizoram State said. Khonumthung News
